Information about Saturday School

August 29, 2011

Dear Miller Middle School Parents,

With the first week of school completed, Miller students and staff are off to a great start.  To help that great start continue throughout the rest of the school year, I would like to explain a new set of procedures that will be implemented at Miller this school year.

Teachers at Miller, as well as across the nation, believe students who complete assigned class work will be successful in the classroom by learning the necessary content and processes.

Every Monday, a computer-generated report will be created, looking for any student failing a class.  Missing or late work that has not been turned in or completed by each failing student will be identified.  Students will be expected to complete the necessary work within one to two weeks or face the consequence of Saturday School to get the work done.

Multiple opportunities for completing the work will be offered by classroom teachers before a student will need to attend Saturday School.  Students can complete assignments and projects at home, during after school help sessions, or during Access study hall time.  Our goal is to get the completed, quality work, not to have your student stay for Saturday School.

If your student is identified as failing a class and has outstanding work that needs to be completed, parents will be notified by telephone and through US mail.  Students will be expected to stay for after school help sessions until the work is turned in or completed.  If the work is not finished by the next scheduled Saturday School session, your child will be expected to attend school from 9 – 11 am on Saturday.  Further Saturday School details will be given through the phone conversation and in the mail.

The majority of students will not be affected by the new Saturday School procedures as their work is completed and up to date.  For those students needing additional support to be successful, Saturday School is another opportunity to get the support.  The basis for these new procedures is to have student achievement improve by completing assigned work.  We don’t want your child at Saturday School unless additional help with a teacher is needed.

Saturday School is offered twice per month at most.  The first session is scheduled for September 17.  The first grade check will be performed on September 6.

When communication is strong between home and school, students show higher achievement gains in their learning.  As the mission of Marshalltown Schools states, Miller staff is dedicated to”nurturing students to become personally and intellectually empowered for citizenship in a changing world.”

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have questions.

Sincerely,
Sharon McKimpson, Principal
