Twenty teams participated in the Fifth Annual Battle of the Books Bash Monday, March 7, at the Marshalltown Public Library.
The BOB season started with 36 teams of five students from Lenihan Intermediate School and St. Mary’s. Each team was assigned to read 40 books from this year’s list. During the last week of February all the teams took a qualifying test, which included the memorization of all 40 authors and a question from each of the 40 books. From there 20 teams qualified for Monday’s event.
The morning consisted of workshops based on the books; a sample of the workshops include a Civil War re-enactor, a magician, a puzzle workshop, egg art, a Skype session with author, Eric Berlin. In addition to attending two workshops, each team took a championship test over the authors and books.
The winning teams were: First Place: TBN; Second Place: BOB Cats; Third Place: MC2 Legends.
Marshalltown Public Library, in cooperation with Lenihan and MACS, sponsored the Bash with financial support from the Friends of the Public Library, Lennox, and the Marshalltown Assistance League. Many community members volunteered to run workshops, serve lunch, and host the oral round quiz bowl.
