Lenihan Intermediate School sixth graders took part in the gravity cruiser challenge on Feb. 12 in the school’s gym. The challenge had groups of students building gravity cruisers, a prototype toy as part of a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) project in their science classes.
The students competed to see how far each of the cruisers could travel using a lever and weight system.
“Our students spent approximately six weeks working in groups to design and build a prototype toy for a fictitious toy company,” said Jenny Allen, instructional coach at Lenihan. “The most challenging, and frustrating, aspect of this project was figuring out how to power the toy with a lever and weight system.”
First place finishers in the categories of morning science class and afternoon science class were awarded trophies, while second through seventh place finishers in each category were awarded ribbons.
Taking first place in the challenge were three teams including students Blake Jensen, Dayanara Martinez, Lizbeth Mora Montiel, Eric Ocegueda, Rogelio Garcia, Victor Bravo, Rylie McMullen, Lisbeth Santacruz and Brealyn Anderson.
