XLP at the High School Level
The general philosophy of Marshalltown High School is that all teachers are teachers of the gifted and talented. The school therefore offers a continuum of different services as follows:
Tier 1: Differentiated instruction in regular classroom as needed in identified area(s)
-
Placement in advanced, dual-enrollment, and/or AP courses
Tier 2: Differentiated instruction in regular classroom in identified area(s)
-
Placement in advanced, dual-enrollment, and/or AP courses
-
Invitation to participate in clubs, contests, & competitions relating to interests and strengths
Tier 3: Differentiated instruction in regular classroom in identified area(s)
-
Placement in advanced, dual-enrollment, and/or AP courses
-
Invitation to participate in clubs, contests, & competitions relating to interests and strengths
-
Invitation to participate in independent study/small group projects in strength areas
-
Invitation to take independent courses for credit as supported by interest and abilities
Students of high ability are served in the regular classroom at the most basic level of XLP services. At Tier 2, formally identified students are offered participation in many extra-curricular academic teams and clubs. The XLP staff coordinates the majority of these extra-curricular activities.
Students enrolling in XLP class for Tier 3 programming have two options. If they elect to take XLP for credit, they enroll in “XLP Seminar” for first-year MHS students or in an independent course for upperclassmen. These include Independent Research in History, Independent Research in Science, Independent Advanced Math Problem Solving, or online Advanced Placement courses offered through the Iowa AP Online Academy. Students who elect to take XLP for no credit involve themselves in daily group discussions and activities and they participate in independent projects or group activities.
