The Marshalltown Community School District School Board is made up of seven locally elected officials who have a vital role in our school district. These at-large directors are chosen by the community through voting. They are responsible for overseeing various aspects of our schools, such as making decisions about policies, budgets, and educational programs. The school board ensures that our schools are well-managed and provide a good learning environment for students.

All decisions are made during official meetings, which is the only time the board can exercise legal powers. Meetings are a collaborative and constructive decision process to help better MCSD. It is also a time when the community and MCSD staff can have a formal speaking time to all seven directors.

The Board’s Purpose

School boards are required in Iowa to provide local governance and decision-making power in education. They ensure that the needs and interests of the community are represented in important matters related to policies, budgets, and educational programs within the state’s schools.

The school board has complete and final control over local school matters within the limits set by state legislation. MCSD school board policy decisions are carried out by district administrators. Authority lies with the majority of the board and no singular board member has the ability to act independently.

Marshalltown has a seven-member at-large board who are elected to rotating four-year terms by district voters. None of the board members are paid for their service. Elections are held every two years.

Meetings & Agendas

Meetings are held at the Central Administration Office at 1002 S. 3rd Avenue on the third floor, unless noted, on the first and third Monday of the month at 5 p.m. Meeting dates may be moved due to conflicts with holidays, and special board meetings may be scheduled at different times and days of the week. Agendas for meetings – both regular and special – are posted to the Marshalltown Board Doc page at least 24 hours in advance in accordance with Iowa Code.

All Board meetings (aside from closed sessions) are open to the public and community members are encouraged to attend meetings. Regular Board meetings are also shared via live stream through YouTube, and live stream links are made available on the MCSD website, as well as the MCSD Facebook and Twitter pages. Board meeting agendas are available online through the BoardDocs website. If you would like to get an item on a future Board agenda, contact Superintendent Dr. Theron Schutte at 641-754-1000.
