AMES — The Marshalltown girls’ swimming and diving squad suffered its first dual meet defeat of the season, falling 137-48 to No. 10 Ames on Tuesday night.
The Little Cyclones won all but one event as Marshalltown’s Adele Beek captured first place in the 100-yard breaststroke to break up the potential sweep for Ames. Beek won the next-to-last event with a time of 1 minute, 13.68 seconds, finishing more than two seconds ahead of Mady Hermsen of Ames (1:15.81).
Leia Hernandez had a pair of runner-up finishes, coming in a close second in the 50 freestyle. Ellie McCorkle of Ames won in 25.02 with Hernandez second in 25.51. Hernandez also took silver in the 100 freestyle (56.39).
The Bobcats were second in both freestyle relay races as well. The quartet of Beek, Rachel Case, Drea Ceren and Hernandez trailed Ames in the 200 freestyle with a final time of 1:50.15, while the 400 freestyle relay squad of Emma Case, Drea Ceren, Addison Elmore and Hernandez scored silver in 4:03.53.
Elmore claimed third in both the 200 individual medley (2:36.05) and the 100 backstroke (1:10.14), while Beek got bronze in the 100 butterfly (1:14.08).
The foursome of Elmore, Rachel Case, Alex Lasack and Libby Meyer took third in the 200 medley relay to open the meet.
Marshalltown returns to the pool on Thursday with a dual meet at Indianola.
