FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Do students have to qualify every year?
Yes, all qualifications from last school year (2010-2011) for free or reduced meals expire in September 2011 or before. Each child must be re-qualified each year. There are several ways to qualify:
Direct Certification – no application needed
- We are notified monthly starting in July of individual students that are in our school district and participate in food assistance or FIP programs with the Dept of Human Services.
- We are notified by the MCSD Homeless Liaison, Lisa Koester (754-1000) of students who are deemed homeless.
- We are notified of individual students with a Certificate of Eligibility for Migrant status by the MCSD Migrant Liaison, Rachel Inks (754-1000).
You will receive notice for each student that qualifies – IF NOT ALL YOUR STUDENTS ARE LISTED CONTACT THE FOOD SERVICE OFFICE RIGHT AWAY.
Application – forms are available at all school buildings and the Food Service Office.
- See Instructions for these types of application on the pages attached to the application
- Foster children each apply on a separate application.
- Food Assistance or FIP if not included on the info we receive from DHS. Use the SNAP or FIP case number found on the decision letter - Medicaid, Title XIX, FIP card number and EBT card numbers are not acceptable.
- Household Income applications –Income needs to be reported as the amount before anything is taken out.
- Foster children each apply on a separate application.
Do I have to give my social security number?
If you are applying for benefits based on income you must list all digits of your social security number or indicate if you do not have one. We cannot process the form without this.
Do I have to sign the application form to get meal benefits?
Yes if you are completing an application.
What is the “Waiver Statement” or the “Fee Waiver” form?
It is included on the application form or mailed with the benefit notification letter for directly certified students. You may list all students on one form and only sign once. Without the parent or guardian signature on one of these forms we cannot share your qualification to be considered for full or partial waiver of school fees. However, you do not have to sign the fee waiver to get meal benefits – they are handled separately.
If I qualify for free meals and my student takes a sack lunch, can he/she get a milk to drink free?
No, the intent of the program is to provide meals so only milk taken as part of a reimbursable meal is free. Milk to go with a sack lunch is 30¢.
