Franklin Elementary took home the traveling trophy at the first annual Marshalltown Elementary Battle of the Books, held Thursday, April 26, at Marshalltown Public Library.

Each of the six elementary schools held preliminary rounds to qualify one team of fourth graders for the district-wide event. Teams read from a list of 12 books, studying authors and genres, and reviewing the details of each book.

The six school champion teams faced off in three rounds, where they were quizzed about the books they’d read. Between rounds the students did acting and improvisation activities with Tom LaVille and Brenda Morris.

Points from the three rounds were tallied to determine the overall winning school. Franklin will keep the trophy until next year’s competition.
