Principal Aiddy Phomvisay told students and staff to dream big during an assembly at Marshalltown High School on the first day of classes.

Phomvisay stressed that MHS students were more than just test scores and school colors and challenged students to show pride in themselves and each other in order to make MHS a shining source of pride in the community.

During the hour-long assembly Tuesday morning students and staff paid tribute to one other, with introductions of administration, new teachers, and class officers. Members of the Student Senate held an Olympics-themed contest with a team for each class and staff. Events included a rhythmic gymnastics- style ribbon dance and multiple relay races. The result: a split with staff taking two wins and the Class of 2013 taking two more.
