Disney on foot: Anson kids log 1,350 miles on journey to healthy living

Walt Disney World is 1,350 miles from Anson Elementary, or 5,400 laps around the playground. In just over two months Anson students walked that far and today they celebrated.

Students and staff at Anson have been focused on healthy living this year, participating in the Healthier US Schools Challenge and receiving a grant from the Fuel Up to Play 60 program.

On Oct. 4, 2012, the school kicked off an project to “Walk to Disney World” – or walk the laps on the playground equal to the distance to the Florida park. Students could volunteer to walk during lunch and recess time on Tuesdays and Thursdays. For every five miles (20 laps around the playground) the students received a foot charm. By Dec. 11, 2012, the school had completed their goal.

On Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013, each student at Anson received a necklace with a Mickey Mouse charm and students who had helped walk to Disney World received a certificate of recognition during breakfast. Other activities and recognitions were planned throughout the day, including honoring the top distance walkers.

The next destination is the Statue of Liberty.
