Students in Fashion Strategies class brought some holiday cheer to patients at Iowa River Hospice recently, putting the skills they learned to use sewing Christmas stockings.
The students were involved in this service-learning project as part of their curriculum in learning basic sewing construction skills. This project helps the students learn that their skills can be used to help others in our community.
“I knew that sewing this stocking and giving it to them would make them happy” said Avery Smith, one of the students who participated in the project.
Rhonda Miller, Iowa River Hospice coordinator, provided the fabric.
Teaching students to volunteer and give back to their community is an important part of the educational process, said Dee Burt, who teachers the Fashion Strategies class.
“There are so many students with skills and talents that can be shared with our Marshalltown community,” she said.
