Leading the tradition-rich Marshalltown High School Bobcat Marching Band as drum majors this year are senior Moises Garcia and junior Kassie Wilkins.

“Both drum majors have done an excellent job filling their leadership roles,” said MHS Director of Instrumental Music Brett Umthun.  “Each was selected based on an application process and a conducting audition.  They both exhibit confidence, a willingness to learn and great enthusiasm for leading the marching band.”

Wilkins said it’s a lot of responsibility, but “it’s definitely fun.”

This year’s show has a Latin music theme in the Carnival realm, which Wilkins said is shaping up well.

“We had a really good start during band camp,” Wilkins said.

Garcia called the job of drum major “pretty intense” as he tries to maintain the balance of keeping the band motivated and having fun at the same time. He said he’s excited about the show’s theme this year.

“There’s a lot of Latin culture and that’s what I love,” Garcia said. “Since I’m Latino that’s close to home for me.”
