Get to Know the Student School Board Representative: Gissel Hernandez Ibarra

The Marshalltown Community School District has four student school board representatives for the 2023-24 school year. These leaders will provide student perspective and give Marshalltown High School updates to the school board during official meetings. Get to know junior Gissel Hernandez Ibarra, a first time student school board representative.

What activities are you a part of at Marshalltown High School?

Girls varsity soccer and AV club

What is your favorite subject?

Human Growth and Development because it’s really interesting to me to see how humans change throughout their lifetime.

What is a talent you would like to learn some day?

I would like to learn how to play the violin.

What musician or band is currently at the top of your playlist?

Bad Bunny.

What is your comfort TV series?

The Rookie.

What has been your favorite memory so far at Marshalltown Hight School?

My favorite memory would be when I went to my first Friday night lights football game and everyone was throwing baby powder.

What is your proudest accomplishment?

My proudest accomplish is that I will be graduating with my Associates degree.

What is the best piece of advice you have received so far?

If the students from last years class can do it, why cant you?

Who is your hero and why?

My hero is my mom. She is truly my best friend and has worked so hard to make me happy and to put me in a good spot in life. She puts her children’s needs in front of hers on a daily basis and I am eternally grateful for her.

What is your biggest dream or goal in life?

My biggest goal in life is to live in the house that had me amazed when I drove past it one year ago.

What are your plans for after high school?

To go to University of Iowa and finish their diagnostic sonography program, then to land a job in Kansas City.

What does it mean to you to embrace the lead?

Embracing the lead means to me to embrace being a leader. To embrace being a leader means to always look for ways to self improve and to be open minded towards feedback. Understanding your weaknesses and strengths is also an asset to embracing being a leader.
