Programs pairing food and books popular this summer

Students visiting Hoglan, Anson or Franklin elementary schools for lunch this summer get more than a meal. They get a chance to read with community members.

At Hoglan Elementary those volutneers come from school partner Hope Methodist Church. Charles and Lois Cochran met with Learning Supports Specialist Jason August in the spring to organize it. Since then about 15 members of Hope Methodist Church volunteer throughout the Summer Meal Program, sitting with students and reading.

At Anson and Franklin elementary schools the “Munch and More” program, organized through the Spread the Words: Read by Third initiative, brings together students with community volunteers to read books. Franklin Elementary holds Munch and More on Wednesdays, while Anson holds it on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
