Employee of the Quarter Spotlight: Jenn Nelson

The Marshalltown Community School District (MCSD) Employee of the Quarter Award recognizes employees who provide excellence in service and attitude to our school community. Recipients are positive role models within their department and/or building and demonstrate a commitment to go above and expectations.

Instructional Coach Jenn Nelson at Anson Elementary School was one of the second quarter recipients of the award for the 2023-24 school year, nominated by Anson Principal Ronnie Manis.

“In her position of Instructional Coach, Jenn stays in constant touch with the teachers. She makes it a priority to stay transparent with teachers even as she also continues to teach kindergarten,” said Manis.

Get to know Nelson and her story:

Why did you decide join the Marshalltown Community School District?

I completed 8-12th grades in Marshalltown and when I moved back to Marshalltown with my own family, I wanted to make a positive impact on the community, so I applied to teach in Marshalltown.

What do you enjoy most about being a member of the Bobcat community?

The Marshalltown School District’s unwavering focus on continuous learning and improvement is one reason I am proud to be an educator in this school district. There are so many incredible individuals who work hard to prioritize what is best for students; working alongside so many amazing people is a gift!

What about your role at MCSD surprises you?

I was surprised to learn that our district has been implementing the Science of Reading practices for the past five years while numerous districts in Iowa have only just begun learning about these research-based practices, including those districts in Iowa’s larger cities! This speaks volumes to the dedication of our leadership within the district to ensure we are always doing what is best for students!

In your opinion, what makes Marshalltown Community School District special?

Students, parents, staff and all community members who support our schools make MCSD special. Also, our school district affords a variety of opportunities for students to prepare for their post secondary experiences, whether it be graduating with an AA degree, a seal of biliteracy, a CNA license, mechanics or welding experience, etc, students can explore their passion and graduate high school prepared for their next adventure.

What does it mean to you to be a Bobcat?

Being a Bobcat means that I am a part of a community that celebrates our differences and works together, doing our best to have a positive impact on students! It means working alongside colleagues to learn, reflect, grow, and make a difference. I am so proud to be a Bobcat!
