Lenihan students compete at speech and debate competition

Three Lenihan Intermediate School students received awards at a speech and debate tournament on May 7 in Des Moines. Pictured, from left, are Drake Polley, Brynn Van Buren and Quinton Lacey.

Ten sixth graders from Lenihan Intermediate School competed in the middle school speech and debate regional competition on May 7 at Des Moines East High School.

Three of the Lenihan students placed at the event including: Drake Polley, third place for prose and poetry; Quinton Lacey, second place for humorous interpretation; and Brynn Van Buren, third place for humorous interpretation.

Other students from Lenihan who competed at the event included Ellie Draisey, Stephanie Urieta, Roger Villeda, Norah Wilson, Lilly Duff, Sydney Hotchkiss and Erin Stanley.

“The kids had an absolute blast,” said Lenihan Extended Learning Program teacher Vanessa Engel.  “This was an experience that I think they will always remember.”
