National School Counseling Week, observed from Monday, Feb. 2 through Friday, Feb. 6 this year, highlights the vital role school counselors play in supporting students' academic, social, and emotional growth. This week is an opportunity to recognize the dedication and impact of school counselors who work tirelessly to guide, advocate, and empower students to reach their full potential. It also serves as a reminder of the importance of providing students with the resources, encouragement, and support they need to navigate their educational journey.

In honor of National School Counseling Week, we are spotlighting several of our school counselors and the invaluable work they do. John Augustine, a school counselor at Miller Middle School, is one of many dedicated professionals who work tirelessly to create a positive and welcoming school environment where students feel heard, supported, and prepared for success.

Learn more about his experiences and insights by reading Augustine's responses to the following Q&A:

What inspired you to pursue a career in school counseling?

I was working in the schools in another capacity and I really enjoyed working with students and staff in the school environment. I believe education is very important and wanted to work with students to help them be successful.

How do MCSD’s programs or resources support your efforts to help students thrive?

Miller has several outside agencies we work with that support students. MCSD has a lot of extra curricular opportunities too, which I feel are very beneficial for students. Also a lot of class choices at MHS to get students ready for trade schools or college, and their careers. Many (dual credit) college credit options at MHS, which we help students plan at MMS.

What makes Marshalltown’s approach to counseling unique?

We have a lot of agencies that support us and other counseling like staff members (JCS, Social Workers, Behavioral Interventionists).

What do you find most rewarding about serving students and families in MCSD?

See students have success, overcome problems, and get involved in extra curricular activities.

What’s the most rewarding part of being a counselor?

Helping others and seeing students thrive or making progress.

What does it mean to you to Embrace The Lead?

Promoting actions and habits that help students be successful at school, which leads to success in life. (Attending school, trying your hardest, respecting others, getting involved).
